Module 13: Scales & Patterns

The Musical Periodic Table

Scales are not punishment; they are the DNA of all music. 99% of melodies are just fragments of scales. If you know your scales, you can sight-read anything.

The Cycle of Fifths

This is the map of the harmonic universe. We learn keys by adding one sharp or flat at a time.

  • C Major: No Sharps/Flats. (The White Keys)
  • G Major: 1 Sharp (F#).
  • D Major: 2 Sharps (F#, C#).
  • F Major: 1 Flat (Bb).
  • Bb Major: 2 Flats (Bb, Eb).

Memorize this order. It never changes.

Muscle Memory Coding

Do not practice until you get it right. Practice until you cannot get it wrong.

Your fingers must fly to the buttons automatically. Practice silent fingering — run through your C Major scale pressing the valves without blowing the horn — while watching TV. You can't center pitches with a disconnected brain, but you CAN safely drill the finger patterns into muscle memory.

The Major Scale Formula

Whole, Whole, Half, Whole, Whole, Whole, Half. (W-W-H-W-W-W-H).

Start on ANY note, follow that pattern of steps, and you will play a Major Scale. It is universal math.
