Module 9: Slurring (Flexibility)

The Smooth Road

A 'Slur' is changing notes without tonguing. There is no break in the sound. The airflow never stops. It is the most important skill for a beautiful sound because it forces you to prioritize air over tongue.

The Tongue Arch (Vowels)

How do we jump intervals without valves? We change the air speed by changing the shape of inside of the mouth (Oral Cavity).

The Vowels:

  • Low Notes: 'Ah' (or 'Oh'). Tongue lies flat. Maximum space. Slow, warm air.
  • Middle Notes: 'Eh'. Tongue rises slightly.
  • High Notes: 'Ee'. Back of tongue arches high near the molars. Small channel = Fast air.

The Slide Whistle Effect

Think of your tongue like an elevator. As it goes up, the pitch goes up. As it drops, the pitch drops.

Drill: Play a middle G. Slur down to Low C ('Ee-Ah' — the tongue drops and opens as the pitch falls). Then slur back up ('Ah-Ee' — the tongue arches up as the pitch rises). Do not use your valves. Do not bump the note with your air. Let the tongue do the work.
