Module 26: The Blues

The 12-Bar Grid

The Blues is the foundation of Jazz. It follows a predictable 12-bar cycle. You must always know where 'Home' (Bar 1) is.

Structure: I (4 bars) -> IV (2 bars) -> I (2 bars) -> V (1 bar) -> IV (1 bar) -> I (2 bars).

The Blues Scale

This 6-note scale works over the entire progression. It contains the 'Blue Notes' (b3 and b7).

  • C Blues: C - Eb - F - F# - G - Bb - C

Learn this in all 12 keys. It is your vocabulary.

The Blue Note (#4/b5)

The F# (in key of C) is the 'b5' or sharp 4. It creates dissonance. It wants to resolve to the 5 (G) or the 4 (F). It is the 'grease' of the blues.

Jam Session Etiquette

Jazz is conversation. Do not just play unconnected scales.

  1. State the Theme: Play a simple melody.
  2. Develop it: Change it slightly.
  3. Leave Space: Let the rhythm section breathe.
