Module 18: Sight Reading Strategies
The Radar Scan
Sight reading is 90% BRAIN and 10% LIPS. You usually have 30 seconds before the count-off. Do not just sit there. SCAN.
- Key Signature: How many flats? Tap the fingers for the affected notes (e.g., Bb, Eb, Ab).
- Time Signature: Is it 4/4 or Cut Time?
- Tempo: Fast or slow?
- Repeats: Look for the signs. Where do you jump back to?

Key Signature Survival
The biggest error is playing a natural instead of a flat. Visualize the scale in your head. If the key is Eb (3 flats), mentally highlight Eb, Ab, and Bb on your finger map. Decide to play them flat before you even see them.

Rhythm Math (Subdivision)
Rhythm is harder than pitch. If you play a wrong note, it's a 'clam'. If you play a wrong rhythm, the whole band crashes.
Subdivide: If the beat is slow Quarter notes, count Eighth notes in your head ('1-and-2-and'). This keeps you locked in.

Trap Spots (Accidentals)
Scan for 'Accidentals' (sharps, naturals, flats written inside the bar). These are the traps the composer set for you. Circle them mentally. They usually imply a temporary key change.
